News: Leussink and the worldskills national championship
For over 35 years, WorldSkills has been hosting regional, national and international live competition events for the most skilled young tradespeople, allowing them to highlight their skills gained through vocational education and training, trades and apprenticeships.
This year Leussink became a supporting show partner for the June 2018 Skills Show Australian qualifier, which was held at the ICC Darling Harbour in Sydney. For three days it was predicted that over 20,000 people attended the even over three days, including industry leaders, experts and top education providers, enabling attendees to discover future careers through interactive events, demonstrations and competitions. One such attendee was our very own Callum Mayo.
Callum is a first-year tradesman with Leussink, and after completing his Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at Wollongong TAFE for two and a half years, Callum was named Wollongong TAFE’s Student of the Year for 2017. In June of 2018, Callum represented Leussink at the WorldSkills Australia National Championship, where he was up against twelve highly-skilled competitors from across Australia. To support the event, Leussink provided the modular welding tables for participants in the Construction Sheet Work & Sheetmetal category of the competition. In this category, engineering specialists demonstrate their expertise in fabricating and forming metal.
Designed and built to withstand heavy duty wear and tear, the Leussink modular welding table and diverse range of fixturing products can be configured to suit any production environment thanks to its efficiency, versatility and accuracy.
The competitors were judged on a range of tasks they had to complete, comprised of speed, accuracy and quality. We are proud to say that Callum competed very well during the event and narrowly missed out on placing third, finishing fourth overall in the event.
Throughout Leussink’s 40 years of business, we are proud that many of our apprentices have joined the company and stayed on once they have completed their qualifications. Applications for our apprenticeship program are always open. Contact one of our team for more information on how you can join the Leussink team today.
